A race to the cure? Sure, I’ll buy that. Maybe it will give this season the kick in the butt that it hasn’t had thus far…
Let’s bitch it out…
Being a huge Rebekah (Claire Holt) fan, this episode is fantastic for me. She’s witty, and catty, and not afraid to tell everyone the truth. And she hates Elena (Nina Dobrev), which is exactly where my emotions lie this season, so I feel very in tune with the sole female Original. I am so glad she’s back, and I just hope that she can get a few episodes in before someone daggers her again*. Hopefully she will last a little longer this time – dare I hope that she makes it until the end of the season?! – because she is teamed up with Stefan (Paul Wesley) now, so she has a purpose in the game.
*Every time we turn around she’s getting daggered and then un-daggered again. I mean, can’t we cut the girl some slack?
Speaking of Stefan, I don’t blame the guy for wanting his memories of Elena erased. (That didn’t stop me from gasping when he asks Rebekah to do it, though). But honestly? What does Elena expect? That he will just sit around, pining over her while she thinks she’s in love with – and has sex with – Damon (Ian Somerhalder) while throwing it in Stefan’s face? No thanks, trampy vampire bitch. Elena wants the best of both worlds and she thinks that Stefan is just going to sit idly by while she carries on with his brother. So much for their epic love – she just threw that right out the window! (Obviously I get quite passionate about this, if you can’t tell!)
I know there are tons of Damon/Elena fans out there who disagree with me, but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: we have just spent 3 seasons investing our emotions in the epic Stefan and Elena love story, only to have it thrown-out the window. She jumps in bed with Damon, whom she now claims to love (sire bond or no), even though she still loves Stefan (she just doesn’t *love* him), but doesn’t understand why Stefan would want her erased?! Could she be any more self-centred? Gah!
Okay, moving on to safer topics that won’t raise my blood pressure: the race to the cure. I might not like that Stefan is doing this for Elena, but I do like that he’s doing it with Rebekah. I think this ‘race’ idea is a little bit genius. It would be way too boring if everyone worked together, so now we’ve got three(ish) teams all going after the same thing, and Stefan and Rebekah are the underdogs with no special trick in their corner. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Damon might have Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) the vampire hunter, but Jeremy seems to be a little out of his depth on this one.
And I obviously don’t want Shane (David Alpay) getting there first. The guy has given me the creeps since the very beginning, and now he’s got Bonnie (Kat Graham) hooked i to his weird “expression” magic scheme (though really, I don’t expect much more from Bonnie. The girl can’t get anything right to save her life). So their team is going to need some serious help if they have a hope of getting there first.
Which leaves Stefan and Rebekah. Although they don’t have the map or the magic or any other tricks (that we know about) at least they aren’t fighting against any anchors holding their team back. So you heard it here first: I’m putting my money on Stefan and Rebekah.
Other observations:
- As much as I despise Elena, I do really enjoy the moment when she is forced to tell Stefan how he makes her feel versus how Damon makes her feel. It was very real and I love that – almost as much as I love her expression when she realizes Stefan wants to erase any memory of her, and then walks away when she wants to talk.
- I adore Caroline (Candice Accola). She is amazing in the hostage scenes and just so genuine, but I feel like she’s been underused lately. In this episode, she is pretty much just everyone’s sidekick – there for Stefan and Tyler (Michael Trevino) without a story of her own. Can we not give this talented actress more to do?! That’s what I would like to see more of.
- The return of Kol (Nathaniel Buzolic) gives me hope that, one day, I will be reunited with my Elijah (Daniel Gillies). Perhaps on the now-confirmed The Originals spin-off?
So what did you think of tonight’s episode? Are you frightened by how much I hate Elena? Were you as happy as I was to see Rebekah back on the scene? Sound off below in the comments!
