Being Erica Recap – 4 x 11 “Dr. Erica” (Series Finale)

December 13, 2011 by tvangie

It’s so hard to say good-bye isn’t it? Being Erica had what appears* to be its final episode last night, and true to how the rest of the season has gone, there were no huge reveals or mind-bending twists, but a focus on accepting endings and starting new beginnings.

Creator Jana Sinyor has stated:

Season 4 is the end. It’s important to Aaron and I to be able to finish the story in a way that is satisfying to our audience. This is going to be a big year for Erica, and by the end of it – she will have finished the journey she started…

Think this happened? Let’s see as we break it down…

*There are some rumblings going on about how this may not be the final season, as many of the episode descriptions define this as the “season” vs. “series” finale. Take a look at some of these articles featuring interviews with creator/executive producer Jana Sinyor and executive producer Aaron Martin and judge for yourself. It sounds to me like this was their last season, but I think CBC might want to leave the door open to season five. CBC’s renewals came out in February this year, so we have a couple of months of nail-biting to see if this will actually happen and Erica’s journey continues. Judging by this season (*cough Ford Focus, Tetley Infusions cough*) and this episode, I’m putting my money on this being last of the series.

The Best of Being Erica

Well viewers, we’ve reached that point – Being Erica has its very last episode tonight (sniff). I thought it was fitting (especially considering how uneven this season has been) to remind myself why I think Being Erica has been one of the most interesting and engaging shows of late (serious bonus points for being a decidedly Canadian show as well).

So let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and take a look at some of Being Erica’s best moments (in chronological order).

*Obviously there are many more great scenes that aren’t included in this list. These scenes represent those which really stuck out to me as being something special and memorable. It is by no means an exhaustive list. Please share your top picks in the comments!

Being Erica recap – 4×10: ‘Purim’

December 6, 2011 by tvangie

Being Erica had a pretty strong comeback with its second last episode of the season. Yes viewers, thanks to my trusty PVR descriptors – I scrolled ahead to next week and saw that indeed episode 11, titled “Dr. Erica” is our series finale (sniff). Although I’ve ranted about how uneven season four has been, as I’ve alluded to in previous posts and comments , the series as a whole has really been something special. I’ve gotten hours of entertainment of Erica’s (Erin Karpluk) adventures with Dr. Tom (Michael Riley), it’s offered me the opportunity for much inward reflection and I’m just not at the point of complete disavowal.

The elements which resonate in “Purim” really encapsulate what’s great about the entire series. So without further ado, let’s take a closer look… [Read more…]

Being Erica Recap – 4×09 ‘Erica’s Adventures in Wonderland’

November 29, 2011 by tvangie

It’s time to start the countdown folks. With only three more episodes to go in the series, this week’s episode of Being Erica attempts to clean up the sloppy mess the show has created for itself for the better part of this season.

Let’s break it down…

Being Erica recap – 4×08 – ‘Please, Please Tell Me Know’

With just a few more episodes left in the series, Being Erica finally addressed some sticky issues regarding time travel and hinted at some of the rules of what the whole “doctor” process entails.

Despite addressing the larger mythology questions of the series, this episode had some major missteps. Being Erica has been one of my favourite shows of all time, but I feel this current season has been struggling to live up to the kind of quality I’ve seen in previous seasons in terms of character motivation and narrative cohesion.

Being Erica recap – 4×07: ‘Being Ethan’

Judging by Being Erica’s latest episode, it looks like the show is falling into a very similar routine week after week this season. I’m disappointed seeing as these are the last few episodes of one of my favourite Canadian television shows.  We’re over the half way mark in the show’s final season and some burning issues still remain.

Nevertheless, it was great to see a reunion of sorts as this week’s episode focused on Erica’s (Erin Karpluk) adorable ex-boyfriend and former best friend, Ethan Wakefield (Tyron Leitso).
