It’s a new year and a new day, but for our purposes, January mostly means a return to regular coverage. Will you watch with us?
Let’s bitch it out…
After most of our shows took the month of December off, nearly everything comes back to the airwaves, with a few new additions. Let’s start with some premiere dates:
- Lost Girl (Sundays at 9pm EST on Showcase – Canada) [Ongoing coverage]
- The Good Wife S6 – Sunday, Jan 4 at 9pm EST (CBS)
- Gotham S1 – Monday, Jan 5 at 8pm EST (FOX)
- Sleepy Hollow S2 – Monday, Jan 5 at 9pm EST (FOX)
- Grimm S4 – Friday, Jan 16 at 9pm EST (NBC)
- The Originals S2 – Monday, Jan 19 at 8pm EST (The CW)
- The Flash S1 – Tuesday, Jan 20 at 8pm EST (The CW)
- Arrow S3 – Wednesday, Jan 21 at 8pm EST (The CW)
- Scandal S4 – Thursday, Jan 29 at 10pm EST (ABC)
And now for the January newbies:
Marvel’s Agent Carter S1
- What is it? An eight part spin-off focusing on Captain America’s girl, Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell) in 1946 as she fights gender discrimination, helps Iron Man‘s father, Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper), and maybe founds S.H.I.E.L.D. along the way.
- Why should you care? The show was greenlit based on the strength of Carter’s self-titled One-Shot from the Iron Man 3 DVD a few years back. Atwell is more than capable of anchoring her own show, the period setting has plenty of potential and the showrunner cast Dollhouse chameleon Enver Gjokaj, which is an automatic thumbs up in our books.
- Who’s covering it? cinephilactic has volunteered to join Agent Carter’s team for the next few months.
- Debuts: The two hour opener drops on Tuesday, Jan 6 at 8pm EST (ABC)
The Fall S2
- What is it? Two years ago BBC Two debuted a cat and mouse series about a detective superintendent brought to Belfast to investigate a series of murders targeting young brunettes. The series, starring Gillian Anderson as the cold-as-ice cop and rising star Jamie Dornan (Once Upon A Time, the forthcoming Fifty Shades of Grey) as the serial killer, courted acclaim for its writing and acting, as well as the duality between predator and prey. It was also not without controversy for its open-ending and its depiction of violence against women (understandable given Dornan’s model good looks and the artistic staging of the murders).
- Why should you care? The Fall came in at a strong #2 on the 2013 Bitch Awards and Anderson’s work in the series (just like her work on NBC’s Hannibal) is simply outstanding. We’re curious to see if the quality holds up in S2.
- Who’s covering it? cinephilactic will provide week by week reviews or a general S2 overview (TBD)
- Debuts: All six episodes arrive Friday, Jan 16 on Netflix
Justified S6
http://youtu.be/Uani32XQwC8
- Where did we leave off? As we discussed yesterday, S5 felt like one long extended tease for this final season. In the closing moments of the finale, we learned that Raylan (Timothy Olyphant), the smart mouth Marshal protagonist, successfully turned Ava (Joelle Carter) into a witness against Boyd Crowder (Walton Goggins). This final season will likely focus on the showdown between the two childhood adversaries. Place your bets now on who wins.
- Why should you care? Umm…because it’s the final season of arguably FX’s best show and you’ll want to know who kills whom?
- Who’s covering it? cinephilactic will wrap up Justified‘s last run.
- Returns: Tuesday, Jan 19 at 10pm EST on FX
