The race heats up with the news that there is only one dose of the cure, as we all wonder who deserves it the most.
Let’s bitch it out…
I’m not sure where to start. I know there are much more important things to discuss from the episode, but I must follow my heart (it is the Valentine’s Day episode, after all!) and talk about how amazing Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is. Sometimes I forget how much I love him, and then he ever so sarcastically humbles a confident Caroline (Candice Accola) and Tyler (Michael Trevino) with his knowledge of a long dead Biblical language. Or he offers Tyler a head start instead of killing him, just because Caroline asks. He makes me laugh, he makes me cry and he tugs at my heart strings, all in the same episode. If only my girl Caroline would love him back! But I’m keeping the faith. Especially now that Tyler has flown the coop for parts unknown to live a long and happy life without thinking of Caroline (finally!). Sorry Tyler, but we need you gone if Caroline is going to move on to Klaus one of these days.
Okay…back to the cure. There’s only one dose. Well, that certainly complicates things. But you know what? I’m actually not surprised. If there had been enough to cure whoever wanted it, word would have traveled to Mystic Falls a lot sooner than now. Alas, all our heroes are devastated to learn there’s only one dose before turning to the more pressing question: who deserves it the most? Is it Elena (Nina Dobrev) because she’s the newest, she’s struggling and she’s sired to Damon (Ian Somerhalder)? In one word: no. Elena shouldn’t get to have everything all the time. She’s absolutely right when she says that even if she takes it, she won’t go back to the girl she was before. So what’s the point? Just so Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) won’t want to kill her anymore? Sorry, but that’s not good enough. So Elena is out.
Stefan (Paul Wesley) also wants it, but not bad enough to make him the most deserving. So he’s out, too.
Of our main characters left in the race, I would pick Rebekah (Claire Holt), though some may say that I’m biased (ha – never!). If we’re breaking it down, Rebekah has lived a thousand years and wanted to be human for nearly that entire time. She’s not like Klaus; she doesn’t like the power and the fearlessness that comes with immortality. No, Rebekah is much more sensitive and vulnerable and wants the love and white picket fence that comes with human life. And come on, she has been screwed over more times than we can count! This girl deserves a break. Which makes it all the more frustrating that she gets sidelined by the new hunter Vaughn (Charlie Bewley) and doesn’t even make it down to the tomb! So she’s likely also out.
Not that any of these speculations mean anything! All of this is moot when Katherine (also Nina Dobrev) shows up on the scene, kills Jeremy and runs off with the cure. So now we’ve got the most powerful being of all time rising, the only weapon against him is gone, a possibly dead Gilbert sibling (which i REFUSE to believe), Bonnie (Kat Graham) is stabbed and bleeding… well this certainly didn’t turn out how anyone expected, did it?
The bigger question is why Katherine cares. I would be beyond surprised if they try to tell us Katherine wants to take the cure herself. So I’m assuming she stole it to use as leverage for the highest bidder. So perhaps Rebekah still has a shot after all! (Clearly I’m not giving up hope)
Other observations:
- As Jeremy lays on the ground, possibly dead, I literally chanted (out loud no less) “is he wearing his ring? is he wearing his ring?” over and over and over. I’m not sure if the ring works on him now that he’s a Hunter, but there has to be a loophole, right? I already have two options in mind: 1) mystical side effect of being a hunter or 2) Silas will raise him from the dead. (Clearly I’m not giving up hope here either!!!) Stay strong Jeremy fans. This will work out for us.
- Please tell me we don’t have to sit through a vomit inducing “friendship” between Elena and Stefan now. Give me a break. So they bond over the cure. So what? That does NOT mean that he should forgive her or be nice to her again. Bitchy Stefan was much better than puppy dog Stefan who falls all over himself to be nice to her. I am disgusted when he confirms to Rebekah that he would give the one dose to Elena. What is so special about this girl?! Someone please explain it to me!
- After Bonnie’s hallucination of Grams (Jasmine Guy), I am holding out hope for an appearance from one of our other dearly departed friends to make a cameo. I got excited when someone snuck up on Elena thinking about who I would be most excited to see: Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning)? Alaric (Matt Davis)? Anyone other than Katherine? I am disappointed they didn’t do more with that opportunity to bring back other beloved characters who have moved on.
- Anyone else suffer a Lost (or even Arrow for that matter!) flashback with the whole “we aren’t alone on this island” part?
So what did you think of ‘Down the Rabbit Hole’? What did you think of the cliffhanger with Jeremy? Are you surprised at how much hope I hold out for some of these storylines?! What do you think Katherine will do with the cure? Sound off below!
