The Vampire Diaries review – 4×13 : ‘Into the Wild’

As our weary travellers find they’re not alone on this remote island, trouble is brewing back at the Gilbert house for everyone’s favourite vampire Barbie.

Let’s bitch it out..

Finally! After weeks of being who knows where, Caroline (Candice Accola) has returned to do what only she can – bring out the best in people. Even though we get no explanation for where she has been and why she hasn’t been a part of this race for the cure, I’m willing to overlook all of that. I guess we are supposed to assume that she has been consoling Tyler (Michael Trevino) over the death of his mother, but its just not realistic. She has been Stefan’s (Paul Wesley) side kick for months and her two best friends are in to dark magic and loving the wrong guy. Knowing all that, we are supposed to believe that Caroline, who is the nosiest person alive, let them go on a trek to a remote island somewhere near Nova Scotia to find the cure and she didn’t demand to be a part of it?!?

However, as I said, I’m willing to overlook it for one reason : Klaus (Joseph Morgan). We all know how I feel about his unrequited love and how much I wish they could be together, but that’s never going to happen if he doesn’t stop doing stupid, destructive things! Geez. Who tries to kill the girl they love just because you hate her boyfriend?! Someone with a thousand years of attachment issues I guess. But oh WOW does my heart melt when she admits she knows he’s in love with her and she believes that means he can be saved. YES Caroline! Do not give up on him just yet!!

Ok. I guess I should address our team of misfits on a hunt for the cure. Firstly, we’ve got Shane (David Alpay). Yes he opens up and shares some of what brought him to this place, but he also deceives everyone, kidnaps Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Bonnie (Kat Graham) and admits that he taught Bonnie ‘Expression’ magic to make sure he’s the only one that can control her – thus ensuring he won’t be killed by the team. This guy has some serious issues. But, he’s doing it all in the name of love, so I guess that’s a redeeming quality? (Silver linings people, gotta look for the silver linings)

Then we have Damon (Ian Somerhalder), who’s sulking because he doesn’t want to find the cure and grow old with Elena (Nina Dobrev), and so doesn’t want her to take it either. That’s right folks – he should be worried. We all know, as does Damon, that when Elena is back to being human, she’s going to realize Stefan is the one to grow old with; Stefan is the one who would love her forever and not do self destructive things like another sultry vampire we know and love. Sorry Delena fans, but if she takes that cure and becomes human, there’s no doubt that its Stefan that she’s going to want by her side.

In my humble opinion, Rebekah (Claire Holt) gets better and better every single week. Her vulnerability is so touching and makes her so relatable, and its so clear that all she wants is to be loved. She can even explain away all the times she tried to kill Elena and not only make us (and Stefan) understand, but also makes us sympathize with her as well. That’s talent right there, and I am at the top of the list of Holt’s biggest fans.

Other observations:

– I should have known that we wouldn’t get to the cure in one episode. I’m not used to our gang being out of Mystic Falls, so just assumed they wouldn’t be gone for long. But here’s hoping we don’t have to drag this out over a number of weeks. This could get old really fast.

– Love the shout out to Aunt Jenna (Sara Canning). It would’ve been nice to have an Alaric (Matt Davis) reference as well, but that would’ve been too much for my poor heart to handle so I guess I am better off. <sigh>

– Having a team of Stefan, Elena and Rebekah seems like it could be disaster, but I think they’ll fumble their way through just fine. All three of them want to take the cure and become human again, and the girls prove that they can co-exist for the greater good so I think they’ve got a solid shot. I would sure like to see them get there before crazy professor Shane raises the dead, that’s for sure.

So what did you think of this episode? Were you missing the Matt (Zach Roerig) like I was? Who do you think will get the cure first? Do you really think any of them will get to become human again? Sound off below!

The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8pm EST on the CW.
