Remember when September TV seemed overwhelming? Well October’s got a brand new bag.
Let’s bitch it out…
Just like September, we’re going to break down the new and returning shows into three categories: New & Notable, Returning Favourites and Guilty Pleasures. As always, we’re watching shows marked with an asterix (*) and the full list of October shows can be found at the bottom of the post.
New & Notable
Westworld S1 (Oct 2 – HBO)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=niFjn-uax3M
- What is it? Westworld isn’t your typical amusement park. Intended for rich vacationers, the futuristic park — which is looked after by robotic “hosts” – allows its visitors to live out their fantasies through artificial consciousness. No matter how illicit the fantasy may be, there are no consequences for the park’s guests, allowing for any wish to be indulged.
- Why is it New & Notable? The 1973 film adaptation of the Michael Crichton novel has its fans, but this new version has a far more impressive pedigree. Jonathan Nolan (brother of film director Christopher) is the series creator and the cast is freaking loaded: Oscar winner Anthony Hopkins, Golden Globe winner Ed Harris, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Jeffrey Wright, Thandie Newton, and rising star Tessa Thompson. HBO is betting large on this series as their next Game of Thrones and advance reviews are rapturous, despite the rocky inception, which has included delays and controversy around its approach to sex and violence (primarily against women).

- Debuts: Sunday, Oct 2 at 9pm EST
Timeless S1 (Oct 3 – NBC)*
- What is it? One of three new time-travel shows set debuting this season, involves dueling time machines. When a criminal (ER‘s Goran Visnjic) steals one with the goal of changing the past to destroy America as we know it, an unlikely trio of heroes (a scientist, a history professor, and a soldier) uses the machine’s prototype to try to stop him.
- Why is it New & Notable? Timeless looks like this year’s idiotic action-adventure show. Despite the silly premise, it hails from experienced showrunners Eric Kripke (Supernatural, Revolution) and Shawn Ryan (The Shield) and has lots of fun people (most specifically perennially underappreciated actress Abigail Spencer, who wraps up four seasons of Rectify later this month). So yeah…this is basically the month’s top “park your brain and enjoy” series.
- # of episodes:13
- Debuts: Monday, Oct 3 at 10pm EST
Kim’s Convenience S1 (oCT 4 – CBC)
- What is it? The world of Kim’s Convenience is real, colourful and urban – a diverse landscape of people and places and at the heart is the Kim family and their store. While the family continues to work and live, finding humour in the everyday tasks of running the store, they long for the day when the rift between Appa and Jung is mended and the family is whole once again.
- Why is it New & Notable? Outside of Fresh Off The Boat, there are very few Asian leads on television, so a series based around a contemporary Korean family is worthy of recognition. The play is adapted from an award winning play, so it will be interesting to see how the series expands and builds on its source material.
- # of episodes:13
- Debuts: Tuesday, Oct 4 at 9:30pm EST
Divorce S1 (Oct 9 – HBO)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=–iP8RPaNvw
- What is it? The tale of a long, drawn-out divorce between Frances (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Robert (Thomas Hayden Church) after 10 years together.
- Why is it New & Notable? Obviously the return of SJP to HBO (and television) is a major event, but it’s the creator of the series – Sharon Horgan of the amazing Amazon/BBC series Catastrophe – who has us most excited for Divorce. Just don’t go in expecting a sequel to Sex & The City or else you’ll be gravely disappointed.
- # of episodes: 8
- Debuts: Sunday, Oct 9 at 10pm EST
Insecure S1 (Oct 9 – HBO)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MubTJyWukp8
- What is it? Much like last month’s High Maintenance, Insecure is partially based on a webseries (in this case creator Issa Rae’s Awkward Black Girl). The series explores the friendship between two African American women, Issa and Molly, who deal with their sometimes stormy relationship while also grappling with conflicts inside and outside black culture.
- Why is it New & Notable? Like so many other recent sitcoms, Insecure hails from a multi-talented creator with a fresh voice who is telling stories that haven’t been seen on TV…well…ever (it’s notable, or sad, that Rae is the first female of colour to create a show for HBO). Advance reviews are glowing and it has been regularly cited alongside Glover’s Atlanta, Adlon‘s Better Things, Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag and Notaro’s One Mississippi as the best of Fall’s crop of new series.
- # of episodes:8
- Debuts: Sunday, Oct 9 at 10:30pm EST
Channel Zero S1 (Oct 11 – Syfy)*
- What is it? Based on a popular ‘creepypasta’, Candle Cove centers on one man’s obsessive recollections of a mysterious children’s television program from the 1980s, and his ever-growing suspicions about the role it might have played in a series of nightmarish and deadly events from his childhood.
- Why is it New & Notable? We’re suckers for horror series and this nostalgic series looks like it could be the fall’s (admittedly less popular) version of Stranger Things. That monster looks creepy as f*ck. Syfy certainly thinks that they have a winner: the anthology will return next year with an adaptation of a whole new creepypasta.
- # of episodes: 6
- Debuts: Tuesday, Oct 11 at 9pm EST
Goliath S1 (Oct 14 – Amazon)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5_1LKLtLro
- What is it? Once a powerful lawyer, Billy McBride is now burned out and washed up, spending more time in a bar than a courtroom. When he reluctantly agrees to pursue a wrongful death lawsuit against the biggest client of Cooperman & McBride, the massive law firm he helped create, Billy and his ragtag team uncover a vast and deadly conspiracy, pitting them all in a life or death trial against the ultimate Goliath.
- Why is it New & Notable? The cast is A-list, but the real talking point is behind the camera: this is the new series from David E. Kelley. Amazon was apparently hot enough on this property to order it to series without putting it through their usual demographic pilot season, though the trailer above sure looks rocky to us.
- # of episodes: 8
- Debuts: Friday, Oct 14 at 12am
Berlin Station S1 (Oct 16 – Epix)*
- What is it? A spy thriller about a CIA operative in Germany who attempts to track down the man behind a WikiLeaks-like site.
- Why is it New & Notable? This looks like a well-executed, timely, low-key spy thriller done right. Plus the cast is ridiculous: Jenkins, Armitage, Forbes, Ifans. We have no idea how little upstart Epix managed to snag this talent, but if the content and the actors align, this could be an amazing series.
- # of episodes: 10
- Debuts: Sunday, Oct 16
Eyewitness S1 (Oct 16 – USA)
- What is it? Eyewitness delves into the lives of two innocent teenage boys who bear witness to a triple-homicide while in the midst of a secret romantic encounter. Desperate to keep their relationship a secret and in fear of being found by the perpetrator, they must hide one dangerous secret in order to keep another. But, what they’ve seen cannot be unseen and will change everything forever.
- Why is it New & Notable? The series is adapted from the critically acclaimed Norwegian drama Øyevitne, which may mean it’s a great crime thriller…or it could be the next The Killing. The production values look good regardless and Gil Bellows and Julianne Nicholson are reliable performers.
- # of episodes: 10
- Debuts: Sunday, Oct 16 at 10pm EST
Chance S1 (Oct 19 – Hulu)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TIPRjWN8hcg&list=PLkjk9JUnHAmeH86ZTHVAs2QD5X9SjCYns
- What is it? This psychological thriller, an adaptation of Kem Nunn’s novel follows Dr. Eldon Chance, the San Francisco-based forensic neuropsychiatrist as he “gets sucked into a violent and dangerous world of mistaken identity, police corruption and mental illness.”
- Why is it New & Notable? Hulu apparently wanted Dr. House in their outhouse so much that they outbid other networks for the series and committed to two seasons of 10 episodes apiece. In addition to Laurie, the series boasts lots of other great talent, including former “It” girl Gretchen Mol and Paul Adelstein. Room director Lenny Abrahamson directs multiple episodes.
- # of episodes: 10
- Debuts: Wednesday, Oct 19 at 12am EST (1 episode airs each week)
Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency S1 (Oct 22 – BBC America)
- What is it? The series follows the adventures of Dirk Gently (Samuel Barnett), an eccentric time-traveling “holistic detective”, and his reluctant sidekick Todd Brotzman (Elijah Wood)
- Why is it New & Notable? Because it’s Douglas Adams + Max Landis (Chronicle) + Elijah Wood. Plus it’s British. It looks fun and kooky. Just go with it.
- # of episodes: 8
- Debuts: Saturday, Oct 22 at 9pm EST
The Living and the Dead S1 (Oct 27 – BBC America)*
- What is it? On their return to Somerset after they inherit the family farm, Nathan (Colin Morgan) and his wife Charlotte start to unearth some uncomfortable supernatural happenings in this sleepy parish community that threaten their marriage and their farm.
- Why is it New & Notable? The series hails from Ashley Pharaoh whose Life on Mars was one of the most critically lauded series in Britain back in 2008. The new series has great production values, effectively combining its Victorian setting with atmosphere and mood. If you’re game for a spooky ghost story, this is the vehicle for you.
- # of episodes: 6
- Debuts: Thursday, Oct 27 at 9pm EST
Good Girls Revolt S1 (Oct 27 – Amazon)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qAB_BuPH4EQ
- What is it? This period, New York-set workplace drama is based on Lynn Povich’s book of the same name, which chronicles a sex discrimination suit brought against Newsweek by 46 of its female employees (including Nora Ephron) in 1970.
- Why is it New & Notable? The Mad Men comparisons are most likely unfair, but this look at the early days of feminism in the workplace (and Ephron!) has a nice vibe and could produce some compelling stories. If nothing else, it’s worth a look.
- # of episodes: 10?
- Debuts: All episodes drop Friday, October 28 at 12am EST
Returning Favourites
Ash vs Evil Dead S2 (Oct 2 – STARZ)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzeJTAwqEJ4
- Where did we leave off? Rather than kill Ruby and destroy the Deadites, Ash abandons his crusade in favour of a simple life. Of course, it’s not that easy: the second season finds Ash “leaving his beloved Jacksonville and returning to his hometown of Elk Grove, Michigan. There, he confronts Ruby and the former enemies have to form an uneasy alliance as Elk Grove soon becomes the nucleus of evil.”
- Why is it a favourite? The first season of the STARZ series was a delight. Bruce Campbell’s return to his iconic role and the introduction of Pablo and Kelly created a fun, energetic and incredibly bloody new favourite that stands proudly alongside the original films.
- # of episodes: 10
- Returns: Sunday, Oct 2 at 8pm EST
Elementary S5 (Oct 2 – CBS)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjt9qC1gWH8
- Where did we leave off? Sherlock thwarted an attempt on his life and, eventually, learns that his father has taken over Moriarty’s crime syndicate. After underutilizing John Noble for the better part of the season, the writers have him pack up and head home to London, leaving Sherlock and Joan in peace.
- Why is it a favourite? Long our favourite CBS procedural, the continued adventures of Sherlock and Joan Watson have had their ups and downs over the years, but the dynamic between the central duo remains as strong as ever. The cases are usually intriguing and the season-long arcs add another layer of depth. Need more proof? Check out Den Of Geek‘s piece about why you need to be watching Elementary.
- # of episodes: 22 (or possibly 13, who knows?)
- Returns: Sunday, Oct 2 at 10pm EST
The Flash S3 (Oct 5 – The CW)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwuFofimoWw
- Where did we leave off? After defeating Zoom (yawn), Barry made the bizarre decision to travel back in time and save his mom, which then completely rewrites history.
- Why is it a favourite? The series took a substantial hit trying to launch DOA spinoff Legends of Tomorrow and then put viewers to sleep with the torturous Zoom storyline, but Grant Gustin and the rest of the Flash crew have a bought a lot of goodwill. Here’s hoping the new season (including a musical episode cross-over with Supergirl – squee!) brings some of the fun, light-hearted back to our screens.
- # of episodes: 22
- Returns: Tuesday, Oct 4 at 8pm EST
Supergirl S2 (Oct 10 – The CW)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvzqZKYqQX0
- Where did we leave off? Kara (Melissa Benoist) stopped Non (Chris Vance) and Indigo (Laura Vandervoort) from taking over the world, but it required her to battle her older sister Alex (Cheryl Leigh). Also: James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) gave Kara the kiss-off.
- Why is it a favourite? Let’s acknowledge the elephant in the room: Supergirl is not a great show (sometimes it’s not even good). Still, like The Flash, Benoist is so winning in the role that she often overcomes the show’s deficiencies. The S2 renewal comes with a location change from LA to Vancouver and means that we’ll see less of Calista Flockhart’s Cat Grant, though we do get Ian Gomez of Cougartown in her place, along with Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath) and guest stars Lynda Carter (as the President!) and Teen Wolf refugee Tyler Hoechlin as Superman himself.
- # of episodes: 22
- Returns: Monday, Oct 10 at 8pm EST
Jane the Virgin S3 (Oct 17 – The CW)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O04uFgnagjQ
- Where did we leave off? Alright, where did we leave off? Oh right: Jane and Michael got married! And everything was good. But wait: then it was revealed that Michael’s partner, Susanna Barnett was actually Sin Rostro and she shot him and left him for dead in the Marbella. OMG cliffhanger, I know, right?!
- Why is it a favourite? Jane somehow manages to maintain that sweet fine balance between comedy, drama and telenovela melodrama. The acting remains top notch, the directing and writing are spot on, the family dynamic is possibly the most heartwarming on all of television and the melodramatic twists keep the series fresh and exciting. Plus: there was no sophomore slump last year, so there’s every reason to expect that S3 will be just as good. Jane has earned that trust.
- # of episodes: 22
- Returns: Monday, Oct 17 at 9pm EST
Black Mirror S3 (Oct 21 – Netflix)*
- Where did we leave off? Technically Black Mirror doesn’t do continuity; it’s a series of unrelated standalone episodes loosely connected around the various impacts of present and future technology.
- Why is it a favourite? Charlie Brooker’s amazing dystopian series inevitably pushes boundaries by exploring morals, responsibility, society and politics. The new batch of episodes – the first for Netflix – have a stacked roster of actors and directors, so anticipation is high. I’ve seen the first two episodes and while they’re not masterpieces along the lines of The Entire History of You or Fifteen Million Merits, they’re thoughtful, bizarre, frightening and compelling.
- # of episodes: 6
- Returns: All episodes drop Friday, Oct 21 at 3am EST (6 episodes follow in 2017)
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend S2 (Oct 21 – The CW)*
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImCSjD3vXi8
- Where did we leave off? Just when you thought Rebecca and Greg were finally going to get their shit together, admit their feelings and have an adult relationship, they both blow it: he by getting wasted at the party and she…by hooking up with Josh Chen and admitting that she’s a crazy stalker. Oh dear…
- Why is it a favourite? Out of nowhere, CEG stormed the scene last year, quickly becoming one of the kookiest, silliest, most heartfelt shows on TV. It doesn’t hurt that Rebecca Bloom has created a disasterpiece of a central character and that the musical references and dance numbers are fantastic. We wondered early on how the premise was sustainable; now we wonder how we ever doubted it. With that said, this is a potential death slot, so let’s all tell a friend that they must watch in order to ensure The CW doesn’t do anything foolish.
- # of episodes: 13
- Returns: Friday, Oct 21 at 9pm EST
The Walking Dead S7 (Oct 23 – AMC)
- Where did we leave off? Negan killed someone with Lucille, his fetishized bat. No one knows who, but we’re apparently supposed to be breathless with anticipation.
- Why is it a favourite? We’re completely biased because we don’t like this show at all. But we recognize that loads of people do, so plenty of people care who ends up being murdered. Expect TONS of social media chatter when the series returns and the victim is revealed.
- # of episodes: 8
- Returns: Sunday, Oct 23 at 9pm EST
Rectify S4 (Oct 26 – Sundance)*
- Where did we leave off? Daniel accepted the plea deal, which guaranteed that he would never be tried for murder again, but also required him to leave the state, leaving behind his family and his entire life.
- Why is it a favourite? Rectify is simply one of the best shows on TV. It is quiet and nuanced, which some viewers mistake for being slow and ponderous. The writing, direction and especially acting are top notch and the series is unafraid of tackling its subject matter in a serious, yet entertaining fashion. It’s no small feat, but Rectify has proven its worth time and again. This final season is our most anticipated series of the month.

- Returns: Wednesday, Oct 26 at 10pm EST
Guilty Pleasures
Versailles S1 (Oct 1 – Ovation)
- What is it? Set in France during the reign of Louis XIV, Versailles is tells the riveting story of the “Sun King,” the building of his opulent palace, and all the sex, murder, and power plays that roiled his court.
- Why is it a guilty pleasure? This import is France’s most expensive television production to date and it looks it. It will be interesting to see how Versailles compares to other historical soapy dramas like The Tudors and The Borgias.
- # of episodes: 10
- Debuts: Saturday, Oct 1 at 10pm EST
Conviction S1 (Oct 3 – ABC)
- What’s it about? This soapy series is about Hayes Morrison (Hayley Atwell), a lawyer and former First Daughter with a drug problem who takes a job offer from her “sexy nemesis,” a New York District Attorney, to head up his new wrongful conviction unit to avoid jail time for a cocaine possession charge (and avoid harming her mother’s Senate campaign).
- Why is it a guilty pleasure? Umm…because it looks soapy than a bubble bath and ludicrous to boot? It’s obvious why ABC traded in Atwell’s former Marvel series, Agent Carter, for the more lucrative nighttime soap, but the execution looks…poor to say the least.
- # of episodes: 13
- Debuts: Monday, Oct 3 at 10pm EST
No Tomorrow S1 (Oct 4 – The CW)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Gs3Dm8zO5Q
- What is it? This dramedy follows the budding romance between a straight-laced office worker (Tori Anderson) and a man (Galavant‘s Joshua Sasse) who lives life to the fullest—because he thinks the apocalypse is rapidly approaching.
- Why is it a guilty pleasure? Umm, well because the premise sounds crazy? This sounds like the definition of “cancelled in 3 episodes” and most people are already betting that it’ll end up partnered with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend on Fridays before the end of the month.
- # of episodes:13
- Debuts: Tuesday, Oct 4 at 9pm EST
Frequency S1 (Oct 5 – The CW)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cuykc989IYU
- What is it? This “reimagining” of the 2000 sci-fi film of the same name centers on a female cop (Peyton List) who discovers that she can communicate with her long-dead father (Riley Smith) via ham radio. Together, they work to solve a murder case, but learn there are unintended consequences of meddling with two different time periods.
- Why is it a guilty pleasure? The original feature film is decent, but kinda unexceptional. That means the over/under on this series could go either way, though List and Smith have been threatening to do decent things on multiple other series for a number of years. Maybe this’ll be their break-out?
- # of episodes:13
- Debuts: Wednesday, Oct 5 at 9pm EST
Freakish S1 (Oct 10 – Hulu)
- What is it? A group of high schoolers struggles against predatory mutants who have taken over their town after a chemical plant meltdown.
- Why is it a guilty pleasure? LOL. Read that plot description.
- # of episodes: 9?
- Debuts: Monday, Oct 10 at 12am EST
Bajillion Dollar Propertie$ S2 (Oct 13 – Seeso)
https://youtu.be/7vRMk-UewFE
- What is it? A group of realtors at Platinum Realty compete for a partner postion in the firm by selling as much property as possible.
- Why is it a guilty pleasure? This comedy hails from the minds behind Reno 911! and Comedy Bang Bang and the sketch comedy vibe is strong. Whether or not that appeals to you is likely a personal taste issue, but this feels a bit too broad for us despite the S2 guest star line-up: Zach Galifianakis, Busy Philipps, Patton Oswalt, “Weird Al” Yankovic, Nick Kroll, Jack McBrayer, Casey Wilson, Randall Park, and Dave Foley.
- # of episodes: 9?
- Debuts: Thursday, Oct 13
Haters Back Off S1 (Oct 14 – Netflix)*
- What is it? Based on the character created by Colleen Ballinger, Haters Back Off delves into the oddball family life of Miranda Sings. Sings, an incredibly confident, totally untalented star on the rise, continues to fail upward by the power of her belief that she was born famous, it’s just no one knows it yet.
- Why is it a guilty pleasure? Miranda Sings has become an extremely well known YouTube personality, but this series will truly test her popularity as a brand. How will the comedienne adapt to the confines of a serialized show, albeit one that looks like a blend between traditional sitcom and sketch comedy? This could be Netflix’s biggest misfire…or it could be an avant-garde out-of-the-box success. We’ll have to wait and see.
- # of episodes: 8
- Debuts: Friday, Oct 14 at 3am EST
Wolf Creek S1 (Oct 14 – Pop)*
- What is it? The series follows Eve (Lucy Fry), a young American tourist whose family is murdered in the outback, beginning a high stakes game of cat-and-mouse as she seeks revenge on psychopath Mick Taylor (John Jarratt).
- Why is it a guilty pleasure? Wolf Creek has a very particular audience: fans who enjoy the cat and mouse between the final girl and the sadistic killer. As Bloody Disgusting reviews: “It follows the blueprint of the movie perfectly, introduces a strong new protagonist that you actually care about, and still expands upon the source material in its own way…Wolf Creek certainly meanders and wastes a lot of time that could be applied in many more productive ways. A six-episode series cannot allow any fat. This padding slows down any momentum that Mick or Eve are building and is what ultimately has the series falling short in the end.”
- # of episodes: 6
- Debuts: Friday, Oct 14 at 10pm EST
People of Earth S1 (Oct 31 – TBS)
- What is it? This new oddball comedy centers on a support group for alien abductees.
- Why is it a guilty pleasure? The vibe is very kooky, so this may be a little too silly for some viewers. Still TBS has kinda been on a roll lately and the series is produced by none other than Conan O’Brien and The Office‘s Greg Daniels. Plus: Ana Gasteyer!

Whew! That’s it for October. Thankfully November and December are quieter months, so this is the end of the real onslaught. What do you plan to pick back up? What will you sample? Are you completely overloaded? Sound off below!

Peak TV much?

Just a bit, huh?
