A piece of poo and a bombshell take on the box office as 2017 reaches its halfway point.
Let’s bitch it out…
Not unlike last weekend, we have two very different kinds of releases as July comes to a close. The bigger of the two films is (unfortunately) the childish animated film The Emoji Movie (yes folks, this is what the world has come to). Meanwhile Charlize Theron aims to cement her action cred by toplining the adrenaline-fueled action film Atomic Blonde.

The Emoji Movie
- Cast: Voices of TJ Miller (Office Christmas Party), Anna Faris (The House Bunny)
- Official Synopsis: Gene (Miller), a multi-expressional emoji, sets out on a journey to become a normal emoji
- Good for fans of: texting, shit animation, poo
- Is it worth your time? I won’t even designate this question with a response. Unless you have a very young child or you’re being held at gunpoint and forced to go to the movies, you should not be spending your hard earned money on this.
- Gross: $45 million / Final Gross: $150 million
Atomic Blonde
- Cast: Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road), James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class)
- Official Synopsis: A high-stakes, global action-thriller that takes place in the city of Berlin, on the eve of the Wall’s collapse and the shifting of superpower alliances. Lorraine Broughton (Theron) is a top-level spy for MI6, who is dispatched to Berlin to take down a ruthless espionage ring that has just killed an undercover agent for reasons unknown. She is ordered to cooperate with Berlin station chief David Percival (McAvoy), and the two form an uneasy alliance, unleashing their full arsenal of skills in pursuing a threat that jeopardizes the West’s entire intelligence operation.
- Good for fans of: graphic novel adaptations, period pieces, femme fatales, John Wick
- Is it worth your time? Yes – with a caveat. Theron is obviously the star of the show; she is 100% the main attraction. Apparently she completely dominates the film and sells the action hard. The problem, then, is that the rest of the film isn’t quite up to her standard. In a nutshell: come for Theron and the butt kicking action, but be prepared to be mildly underwhelmed by the rest of the film.
