Smash review – 2×05: ‘The Read-Through’

March 6, 2013 by yellowwait

After last week’s subpar episode, this week Smash rebounds to regain its second season above-average status while giving us a look at three shows in the making. My questions: where is J-Hud? Where has Nikki Blonsky been hiding? And why is Christian Borle not singing in every episode?

Let’s bitch… [Read more…]

What a difference a week makes. After a solid start to the second season, Smash returns to some of the problems that plagued its first season including a nod to one of TVs most hated characters…like ever. On the bright side J-Hud closes the episode with one of the best songs from the series and of course, she kills it. Did I mention Sheryl Lee Ralph (the original Deena Jones!) shows up as Veronica’s mother? Let’s bitch.

After last week’s break (thanks State of the Union), we are back for episode three . This week Smash focuses on the two main storylines: the rewriting of Bombshell and the new musical by Kyle (Andy Mientus) and Jimmy (Jeremy Jordan), while throwing a bone to both Ivy (Megan Hilty) and Veronica (Jennifer Hudson).

Let’s bitch. [Read more…]

Well here we are, a new season, a new show runner, new faces, and a new reviewer. After what many would called a disastrous first season, Smash is back for an encore. Will the hate watchers keep watching or will the show be able to save itself? Well NBC is banking on it with all the heavy promotion of the season two opener. But let’s not get distracted by all the razzle dazzle (OMG it’s J-Hud!!), let’s bitch.

He Said/She Said: Smash recap – 1×15: ‘Bombshell’

Karen Cartwright (Katherine McPhee). That’s who was chosen to portray Marilyn Monroe in ‘Bombshell’ as the NBC show Smash closed out its freshman season last night. Looking back, Smash turned out to be more of a shin-splint marathon rather than a quick easy sprint. It never quite recovered the creative footing it kindasorta demonstrated waaaay back in its pilot, and frequently left us shaking our heads, our fists and the clumps of hair we pulled out during moments of (often Ellis inspired) frustration.

At least we knew that we were in good company, though: even The Hulk was creatively dissatisfied going into the finale.

In honour of ‘Bombshell’, we’re doubling up with two bitches instead of one. So how did the finale do?

Let He Said/She Said bitch it out… [Read more…]

Smash recap – 1×14: ‘Previews’

With only one more episode left in the season, Smash manages to get through some significant plot points in its penultimate episode. Unfortunately, many of them are predictable, but true to Smash form, some stronger moments manage to balance it all out.

Let’s take a closer look after the jump: [Read more…]
