After watching the season finale of Revenge Wednesday, I was certain that I had seen the craziest hour of television that the 2011-2012 season had to offer. Fast forward twenty-four hours and begin a slow-clap for Awake, a complicated show that never quite caught on. Last night touched on insane series finale territory as it somehow managed to answer questions but revealed nothing all at the same time. Let the great debate begin!

It’s quite bittersweet to review a show knowing that it’ll be one of the last episodes EVER. Part of me wishes Awake goes completely out of the box and deliver something really memorable in this two-part finale, perhaps inspiring a letter-writing campaign or a NetFlix revival. The other part of me just hopes that I’ll get closure by the end of it all. “Two Birds” does feel rushed at times, but despite that, I do have a feeling I’ll be satisfied by series’ end.

The week after Awake‘s best hour since the pilot, the show returns to the procedural rut. We do, however, also see a return to the conspiracy angle that’s gone unexplored since 1×02 ‘The Little Guy’. So where does this leave us?

After last week’s iffy episode, it pleases me to no end to see Awake rebound to heights unseen since its pilot as ‘Oregon’ proves to be quietly emotional. Oh sure, the police procedural component is familiar, but it is also exciting and reinforces some of the questions viewers have had about the series thus far.

This is an integral week for NBC’s most audacious drama, Awake. The pilot created a great deal of good will from critics and fans (who saw it) alike, but the true test of the show is determining whether it can maintain its dual world existence over the long run. So how’d it do?
