The Originals review – 1×10 : ‘The Casket Girls’

It’s a night of girl power and double crossing as The Originals returns from its winter hiatus.

Let’s bitch it out…

In an episode about women breaking free from their oppressors, the men of New Orleans play second fiddle to the fairer sex (not that I’m biased or anything…). We all know how much I love Rebekah (Claire Holt), so its no surprise that I enjoy an episode narrated by her and one that sees her best her brother. While I do love her brother Klaus (Joseph Morgan) as well, every time I start to feel pity for him, I’m reminded of all the time he’s broken the hearts of his siblings, or killed innocent people because he was lashing out, etc. The list of his sins is long and he will forever be tortured as a result, so sometimes its good to see him not get his way and get a taste of his own medicine.

Its nice to see Rebekah on top again, even though I’m sure it will be short lived. All she wants is to be loved and her lover chose to be loyal to her brother instead. That’s gotta hurt. So no wonder she’s lashing out again her oppressors. Can’t say I blame the girl. I’m actually surprised it has taken this long! I hope, for her sake and the audiences’, that she is even partially successful in stealing New Orleans out from under these boys. Maybe a woman’s touch is exactly what this city needs to stop the terrorizing between the species.

In the meantime, we have Cami (Leah Pipes) who is out for blood now that her compulsion has worn off and she is taking no prisoners. Again, can’t say that I blame her. Poor girl has been compelled, lied to and had the truth about her brother hidden from her for months. She trusted people who didn’t deserve it and that is the one thing that will cause a girl to go off the deep end and fight back. So I’m thinking Klaus should be starting to get worried. He’s going to be getting it from all sides from all these women that he’s wronged.

Speaking of women he has wronged, we can’t forget about Davina (Danielle Campbell). I’m pretty sure she won’t be forgetting any time soon that Klaus killed her boy toy Tim (Shane Coffey). In fact, I’m pretty sure he hasn’t seen anything yet. The strongest witch in town, and he has to go and piss her off. Not smart. He’s been on earth for a thousand years and still doesn’t realize that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And Davina.. girl is scorned. Even an original vampire should know not to mess with a girl’s first crush. Let’s hope for Klaus’ sake that Tim isn’t actually dead.

Even the witches have started gathering again and make an appearance in this episode. Still fighting to complete the Harvest, these ladies don’t let a little thing like repeated failure get them down. Nope, they’re giving it the old college try once again. And thanks to another useless character, Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin), they just might get what they’re looking for this time.

Speaking of useless Hayley, let’s discuss how she’s the only woman, in an episode about girl power, who still manages to be completely useless and make a bigger mess of things than usual. Am I surprised? Nope. Am I tired of it? Yup. How much longer until she pops this demon child out so someone can kill her already? This has been the longest pregnancy known to man and its a supernatural one. Let’s get this over with, shall we?

Other observations:

  • Another semi-useless one is Josh (Steven Krueger). I say “semi” because he does bring a bit of witty banter every once in awhile. Its his only redeeming quality. Though it could use some work… In Turkey where they don’t eat turkey? Yikes. I rest my case.
  • I’m glad Rebekah remains true and doesn’t see Elijah (Daniel Gillies) as the enemy. One of the most charming qualities about this show is the relationship between those two so I would hate to see anything destroy that.
  • I realize we are supposed to be feeling some sexual tension between useless Hayley and charming Elijah, but this is still not doing it for me. Talk about a slow moving pregnancy; their relationship is moving at a glacier’s pace. Either get it on or don’t, but this attempt at tension is just being dragged out wayyyyy too long. Let’s make a decision here and move on.

What did you think about the newest episode? Do you think the witches will succeed in killing Davina? Do you think Rebekah will be successful in bringing down the boys? Do you even want her to? Sound off below!

The Originals airs on Tuesday nights at 8pm EST on the CW.
