ABC and Once Upon A Time have been touting ‘The Stable Boy’ as the episode we’ve all been waiting for: the reveal of why Regina (Lana Parrilla) hates Snow White/Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) so much. So does the truth deliver? In a word: mostly.

The last few episodes of Once Upon A Time have done much to reveal its strengths (the continuing love-challenged relationship between Ginnifer Goodwin’s Snow & Josh Dallas’ Charming, the revisionist take on fairytales, etc) while also highlighting its flaws (telegraphing every upcoming moment, continued ineptness by Jennifer Morrison’s Emma, and – to a certain extent – the continuing love-challenged relationship between Snow and Charming). As the show closes in on the end of the first season, it takes a dramatic formula detour that tantalizes and antagonizes…

The adventure continues as Once Upon A Time delivers a somewhat fresh take on the classic “Beauty and the Beast” fairytale. After a few weeks off, did the show return in top shape or did it continue its recent trend of diminishing returns?

I’m eschewing a traditional recap of the show because I’m at a bit of a cross-roads. Every show has natural ups and downs and not every episode can be a classic. And then there are shows like Once Upon A Time, which seem to be deliberately abusing not only their great premise, but also the audience’s goodwill.
