After last week’s poorly timed side journey into yet another impossible love story, Once Upon a Time had some ground to make up. And while I would have preferred the show tackle Kathyrn’s disappearance head-on, ‘Red-Handed’ was a good character piece with a surprising take on a familiar story.

After a few weeks off for the Academy Awards, Once Upon A Time returns with a bit of a dud – serving up a filler episode full of familiar themes and lacking substantial developments in the larger mythology of the show. Oh, and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) makes another lousy decision as Sheriff…naturally.

Sooo…I haven’t been too kind to ABC’s fairytale show the last few weeks, but I swear it’s only because I think it has so much potential that it’s not living up to. Is tonight’s Prince Charming-centric episode a return to solid ground for the struggling show?

The adventure continues as Once Upon A Time delivers a somewhat fresh take on the classic “Beauty and the Beast” fairytale. After a few weeks off, did the show return in top shape or did it continue its recent trend of diminishing returns?

I’m eschewing a traditional recap of the show because I’m at a bit of a cross-roads. Every show has natural ups and downs and not every episode can be a classic. And then there are shows like Once Upon A Time, which seem to be deliberately abusing not only their great premise, but also the audience’s goodwill.

This week our family fairytale show turns its attention back to Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) and David Nolan (Josh Dallas), aka Snow and Charming. After last week’s lackluster outing focusing on Emma (Jennifer Morrison), I was simply happy to shift the focus onto someone else. Plus: metaphors, metaphors everywhere!
