Commentary – Oscar fashions 2013

February 25, 2013 by yellowwait

I want one!

Well another awards season comes to an end with the Holy Grail of awards: the Oscars.  But who cares who won? The most important questions to be asked are who wore what, and what were they thinking?!  Much like last years recap, we have the best, the “on the fence,” and the bitches of the ball (otherwise known as the hot messes).

Here we go, these are the looks I couldn’t get enough of.

BAM!

Charlize Theron

I love everything about this look. The slim silouhette, the accent at the waist, the train and the short hair. Charlize looks so statuesque and beautiful here. This is my favorite look of the whole evening. 10/10

She ain't going nowhere!

Jennifer Hudson

Now this is workin’ it. Hudson looks amazing in this Roberto Cavalli dress. This could have been too much but the simple cut matched with the busy metallic print is the perfect match. Throw in the hair and sexy thigh high slit, this makes for a perfect Oscar moment. 10/10

Impossibly gorgeous

Naomi Watts

Keeping with the “metallic look” trend on the carpet, we have Naomi Watts in this outstanding Armani Prive dress. I love the asymmetrical top and how sleek it looks. It seriously looks like someone painted glitter on her body. Eat your heart out, Ke$ha! This is glamour! 9.5/10

Shine bright like a Diamond!

Kerry Washington

The always gorgeous Kerry Washington would probably look good in a garbage bag. But luckily for us she chose to wear a dress by Miu Miu and it is absolutely beautiful. The simplicity at the bottom allows us to take in all the gorgeous detailing at the top. I like that she didn’t wear too much jewelry to compete with the dress. It’s really all about that top bustier. 9.5/10

Taking centre stage

Zoe Saldana

Not everybody was a fan of this Alexis Mabille dress but I think it’s really pretty. Yes, there’s a lot going on, but it works for me because the accents don’t overshadow each other. You have the beautiful detailing at the top with a belt to show off her tiny waist. I could’ve done without the bow but I don’t hate it. Saldana always makes bold choices for the red carpets and sometimes she misses but this one is definitely a hit for me. 9/10

Now we move on to the ladies that didn’t quite hit it out of the park.  While they might have had pretty dresses, nothing about their look was memorable enough to make it on the hot list.

Victim of a drive by glittering

Nicole Kidman

When I first saw this L’Wren Scott dress, I really liked it. But as the evening wore on and the more I looked at it, I just couldn’t put it in my best list. The gold dust at the top and the awkward buckle accent sort of work, but the small patch of fallen glitter across the mid-section is (ahem) awkwardly placed. It’s just not a home run for me. 6/10

She's not only walking the red carpet, she's swiffering at the same time.

Amy Adams (scroll for commentary)

Veronica Mars needs to find her a better dress

Amanda Seyfried (scroll for commentary)

Looks like Oscar brought a date

Jessica Chastain

I grouped these ladies together because they all are victims of “wash-out” syndrome.  These uber pale women go for a colour palate of neutral-blahness, that it doesn’t work for me.  While they all look very pretty and the dresses themselves are beautiful, they’re largely forgettable.  Chastain’s is my favorite out of the three, but it’s still not home run.  Adams 5/10  Seyfried 6.5/10  Chastain 7/10

The Chrysler building made it to the show

Halle Berry

I know what you are all thinking: Halle isn’t on the best list?! Nope. As much as I love Halle on the red carpet, this dress just didn’t wow me. It feels too matronly. Don’t get me wrong, the dress is beautiful, but this should have been the dress Sally Field wore.  It may not be fair of me to fault Berry for doing something different but this is my list so the decision stands.  7.5/10

And now the hot messes.  These were looks that just didn’t work.  Time to fire those stylists.

Ladies and gentlemen, our prom queen.

Anne Hathaway

Is it me or did Anne Hathaway’s dress choices get worse and worse as the awards season progressed? (Kinda like her acceptance speeches – Oy!) There is a lot of hate out there for Anne and it pains me to add-on to it but I just hated this look. It reminds me of my classmates’ prom dresses from 1998. And then adding that necklace to the high neck line? Not to mention the cone bra/nipple effect. Major miss here. 4/10

Somebody sucked the life out of this dress.

Kristen Stewart

It’s so easy to hate on K-Stew. The sour puss face, the unwashed hair, the ill-fitting dress (and that before we consider the awful movies she’s inflicted on us). Bad movies aside, this whole look is a disaster.  Hobble/sashay away honey! 3/10

Who says you can't wear a snuggie to the Oscars?

Melissa McCarthy

This pains me. I love Melissa McCarthy, and she is a beautiful and hilarious woman. But I hate this look. This seriously looks like someone threw a blanket over her and called it a dress. Good job, David Meister! I hate it when people make dresses for plus size women that try to hide their bodies. This is a sexy woman. McCarthy needs to call Queen Latifah’s stylist. 3/10

And there you have it.  What did you guys think?  Any obvious hits?  Any disasters that I missed?  Sound off below.

My worst was definitely Brandi Glanville – the bust alone sends her straight to fashion hell. But she’s a “faux” celebrity who really shouldn’t have even been there so…

Oh yeah she was frightful but I chose not to include her. Mostly because she annoys me.
